Promoting Moral Improvement
One idea of the reform movement was that morality would improve the conditions of the poor. To enforce this, they came up with the Prohibition thinking it would better their personal habits, making them better people. The Prohibition banned alcohol through the 18th Amendment, which was later on repealed in the 21st Amendment. One organization, the WCTU (Women’s Temperance Union), especially took action to promote morality among society. They worked mostly to enforce the Prohibition, but they also worked for suffrage, in prisons and asylums, and to open schools for immigrants.
